Meet the Honors Program Social Media Team

By: Derek Hottenstein

When you hear the term “social media,” what comes to mind? People sharing, interacting, and getting to know one another. The people behind the scenes are passionate about helping people connect. The Honors Program social media you’re familiar with is brought to you by a team of three underclassmen, controlling all that’s new and exciting on our Instagram. Carley Varoni, Janice Addo, and Derek Hottenstein.

Carley is a sophomore political science major with a pre-law certificate. The reason she chose SNC in the first place is because of its stellar pre-law program and “how amazing everyone here is.” The Honors Program has allowed her to challenge herself academically and led her to meet some great friends.

Carley really enjoys the small classes and accessibility of the professors. Outside of school, she enjoys hanging out with friends and triumphing on the school’s women’s volleyball team. She also likes going on walks and exploring all that Green Bay has to offer.

Carley joined the social media team because “[she] enjoy[s] creating content and [she] wanted to be more involved in the Honors program.” She hopes to increase the feeling of community and help others build connections because that’s what the program did for her. She says she hopes to contribute another level of creativity and ideas to the social media team. After graduation, she hopes to move on to law school after her Junior year.

Jannice is a first-year pursuing a major in Biomedical Sciences. She chose SNC because “the small campus allows you to get to know your professors well.” She joined the Honors Program because she “thought it would be a great opportunity to meet and live with like-minded students.” And, so far, she has found that it has.

Her favorite part of the classes is all the fun interactions between students throughout discussions and labs. Her favorite thing to do outside of class is writing poetry and playing tennis.

She joined the social media team to keep the fun going and to engage with  other Honors students. She hopes to learn  “how to properly market the Honors program to prospective students” and to contribute “as many insightful ideas as possible.” And that’s exactly what she’s done so far.

Lastly, we have Derek Hottenstein. He’s a first-year Finance Major, with a minor in Communications.

He chose SNC because of its coziness and charm. Being from a smaller town, he wanted  a similar homey environment for his college experience. He also found the Honors Program endearing. Especially the prospect of living with a group of great people who want to push the academic envelope.

His favorite part of classes here is definitely the friendly environment. Not only do the professors know everybody, but everyone knows each other. His favorite thing to do is watch movies. He and his friends have created a movie wheel that they spin to decide what to watch.

He decided to join the social media team because he was on the news team in high school, responsible for writing recaps on sports games, weather reports, and interviewing students. He wanted to continue a similar path here and continue to hone his digital editing skils and he greatly enjoys making fun videos and graphics.

His favorite memory at SNC was being part of the play last fall. He participated in every musical hosted by his high school and had a great time with the play here.

We’ve got quite a great group assembled to capture all the good times that are so common here. Each of them seem to agree; it’s the people that make the difference and create a great community to call home. They work to show their followers that every day. So the next time you open the Instagram page and then close it feeling a little bit happier than before, you know all about who it was making it happen.
