Looking forward…

From the Desk of the Director

As I type this, I have just finished putting the finishing touches on the Honors Program’s new on-line application for admission. A new application signals a fresh approach to identifying students who might be a good fit for the Honors Program, and so I’d like to take a moment to talk about freshness.

This fresh application makes standardized test scores optional. It emphasizes the activities—of all kinds—that applicants have been engaged in and gives more weight to what prospective students say about themselves, their openness to experience, and their stories about how they got to where they are and where they want to go. The fresh application, and the fresh review processes attendant upon it, will function less as a reward for past grades and test scores and more as a gauge of future potential for local leadership in a global community.

In taking these steps forward, the SNC Honors Program is on the forefront of a fresh movement. We look beyond quantified metrics to the whole person in an attempt to capture the human potential waiting to blossom in college and beyond. The world is waking up to this way of looking, this way of seeing, though it is something that has been contained in our Norbertine tradition for 900 years. Won’t you join us as we look forward?
